    Walker Turner drill press help

    Hey guys, I've been reading these forums for a while and I figured this would be a good place to ask for some information about my Walker Turner drill press. The drill press was in rough shape and some parts were off the machine when i got it. I managed to find most of the parts in a box that came with it, however I am missing the bearings for the spindle pulley. I have been searching online and I cant find any information on my particular machine. Most of the info I found stated that it uses bearings with an extended inner race that fits down into the pulley, however my pulley fits snugly onto the shaft (w/o bearings), so I don't think that type of bearing was used. So, I am wondering what type of bearings should be used and if there is some type of part that holds the bearings in place above or below the pulley. Any help is appreciated! thanks.

    The first thing I'll say is that is a very early drill press (prior to 1940). Its rather odd in my opinion. It looks like a 500 series (the odd quill lock) but has the head casting similar to a 700 which came out about 1936-1937. I've only worked on the 900 series which was carried forward in production past WW-II. Also of interest is that this machine predates the splined spindle used on the later units.
    Back to your question. The drive pulley will float on the spindle. There were bearings above and below the pulley to carry the spindle load. Looks like you have at least part if not all of the upper carrier. There would have been a lower carrier in the casting if built like the later machines. And then there were bearings in the quill both upper and lower. Those are the ones that were the odd size if I recall. It could be hard to visualize what this looked like but all those parts could be fairly easily made with a lathe and the could be custom fitted to what ever bearings you could find. The bearings were most certainly shot which is why the machine was in pieces. I'm hoping you have all the important bits because its probably next to impossible to find parts for this machine, unless later parts fit.

    Have you looked on OWWM dot com, aka vintage machinery? You might find a similar, if not same DP and the manual/parts list.

    Thank you very much for your replies. So, after reading your reply i looked at the upper 'carrier' again and there is a bronze bushing pressed inside which I'm beginning to think IS the bearing (this would make sense because my quill also has solid bronze bearings unlike the ball bearings that i think others have?). And if I'm understanding correctly the pulley just floats without being supported from the bottom? If that is the case is it possible that It was just made like this and these are ALL of the parts?
    Oh and i did find it on vintage machinery. Unfortunately I didn't see a manual, but i did find it in a catalog

    So, I just found another picture of this drill press submitted by a user on vintagemachinery... VintageMachinery.org - Photo Index - Walker-Turner Co., Inc. - Drill Press, Model D705 (700 series)
    He states that the machine has all sleeve bearings except for the thrust bearing that is located above the chuck... so I think this confirms my suspicions that all of the parts are here... Now all I need to do is get some paint!

    I based my summary on newer 900's, ironically I was actually thinking about a bronze bearing refit when I was writing the original post. That would certainly work for a something that wasn't used for production work. You're going to need something below the pulley to carry it, otherwise its going to just flop around banging against the casting unless I'm missing something. Since you don't show the underside of the drive pulley I can't be sure what it looks like.

Hey guys, I've been reading these forums for a while and I figured this would be a good place to ask for some information about my Walker Turner drill press.   1. As for the Johannson Drill, it got replaced by a factory reconditioned Carlton Radial Drill. The word is out in our powerplant: no one runs hole saws in any drill presses, and milling gets done on milling machines. The Walker Turner drill you are interested in buying is a fine drill press. To keep it that way, use it only as a drill press.

    The column adapter has a socket head driven spreader acting like an internal collet to snug the adapter against rotation in the column. Only snug until you cannot rotate by hand. As shown, the adapter is positioned generally so bushing is to one side of press and pulley yoke is swiveled across center of the column tube towards the other side of drill press.
