Mar 03, 2011 I scanned the hard copy and made it into a jpeg, but now I need to import it into AutoCAD in order to trace over it. I tried putting the image into a word document, then copying and pasting. It worked, but it made autoCAD run really funny and it was impossible to draw, nevermind trace over it. This function was first introduced in to AutoCAD in the 2017 release, and allows the conversion of the contents of PDF files created in CAD packages to be converted into AutoCAD objects. Prior to AutoCAD 2017, PDF files may be added to drawings as “Underlays” via the “References” dialogue.
Import the Data from a PDF File
- Click Insert tabImport panelPDF Import. Find
- In the Select PDF File dialog box, specify the PDF file that you want to import, and click Open.
- In the Import PDF dialog box:
- If the PDF has multiple pages, choose the page to import by clicking a thumbnail image or by entering a page number.
- Set or clear Specify Insertion Point On-screen as needed. Note: When this option is cleared, the PDF is imported at the UCS origin (0,0).
- Set the scale and rotation.
- Set the options for importing geometry, fills, raster images, and TrueType text objects.
- Choose what method to apply for assigning imported objects to layers.
- Set options to control how PDF objects are processed after being imported.
- Click OK.
- Specify the insertion point if prompted.

Import a Specified Area from a PDF Underlay
- Select the PDF underlay.
- On the PDF Underlay contextual tab, Click Import as Objects. Find
- At the prompt, click two diagonal points that define a rectangular crossing area, or choose one of the other options.
A crossing area is similar to a crossing selection. The Settings option displays a dialog box in which you can choose what types of objects to import, how layers should be accommodated, whether the imported objects should be imported as a block, and several other options.
- Choose whether you want to keep, detach, or unload the attached PDF after the selected objects have been imported.
The specified area of the attached PDF is imported into the drawing as AutoCAD objects.
Convert SHX Geometry into Multiline Text Objects
- Click Insert tabImport panelRecognition Settings. Find
- In the PDF Text Recognition Settings dialog box, under SHX Fonts to Compare, click one or more fonts that appear to be the most similar to the imported SHX geometry.
- Click the up or down arrow buttons to order the list so the most likely font is at the top.
- Choose any other options as desired and then click OK.
- Select the geometric objects that represented the SHX text in the PDF and press Enter. Be careful to avoid selecting any objects that are not part of the characters.
A dialog box reports the percent of the objects that could not be converted to multiline text. The characters that were converted are highlighted. If the threshold percent that you set is not achieved, then the next font that you specified on the list is processed. If none of the fonts pass the threshold try one of the following:
- Select fewer objects for processing. This can help you identify problems and extraneous geometry.
- Select a different font that might be a better match.
- Lower the success threshold percent in the PDF Text Recognition Settings dialog box.
Once you're satisfied with your settings, the process for converting SHX geometry into multiline text becomes much simpler:

I’m working on a Mac. I have a jpeg image of a small map, I need to redraw it with the exact same dimensions on AutoCAD.
I printed it, measured it and redrew it, but there’s a considerable margin of error. So I have to somehow copy paste it in AutoCAD. Or do you guys have another idea?

i tested this guide, and it works, but i am not sure how accurarately it will draw a map...mine was cartoons :)

you can also insert jpg in word file annd insert by copying and pasing, and then you will have to trace.
but go for try to first solution first. it works.
try a bitmap to vector utility, like Corel Draw. scan the jpeg, use the bitmap/vector conversion, save to dwf, and bring to ACAD.
Your simplest bet is to trace the file. Just import it to AutoCad and redraw the lines without worrying about measuerments, at first. Then, when you have the entire drawing complete, take a line or structure you know the proper dimensions (e.g. a wall you know has x meters), and then scale the whole drawing to make the sizes fit.
As an alternative (as i don't really know if you can do the following in AutoCAD), you can try setting the scale first hand, by taking a reference structure (for example, a square-shaped room), drawing its shape in the proper size. Then you can scale the jpeg to make it match your reference object. From there on, it's a prety straight forward process of tracing the rest of the lines.
