Desktopx For Windows 10

  1. DesktopX Enterprise even lets you create desktops that make use of the Windows NT security features. Or put another way, companies can build custom, branded, secure desktops. They'd need DesktopX Enterprise (1 license) to export the secure desktop file (.desktop) and then purchase DesktopX run-times (around $10 apiece in large volumes) to put.

Also, the screen background color does not update. I am running the up-to-date version of Windows 10, 64-bit as of this date, and I am using a 4K monitor (not sure if that makes a difference). – Dan Nissenbaum Apr 13 at 21:00. Gone are the days when movies are simply 2 dimensional. Even some books have become even more 3D as of late. This may be because of the contributions of technology to science and vice versa. With Windows 10, Microsoft finally brought a feature that is standard on other desktop operating systems to Windows: multiple desktops, which the company calls virtual desktops. This is admittedly a power user feature, but it can be helpful for anyone who wants an extra bit of organization.

When adding Virtual Desktops on Windows 10 they are just named sequentially:
Desktop 1, Desktop 2, ... etc

Is there a way to modify these names to provide something more meaningful?
i.e. Home, School, Work, Project?

Note: This has been a long pined over feature for Mac OS X Spaces/Desktops

It seems at this time, you can not rename the virtual desktops in Windows 10. It is a feature that I would love to have though.

Virtual desktop renaming now exists in Windows 10 (Insider Preview) Version 2003 (20H1) Build 18975

This may be released around March-June 2020.

Alternative way of labeling virtual desktops:

  1. Open Notepad, save an empty file something like 'Desktop Name.txt' and then resize the Notepad window down so you can just see the title bar with the desired name.

  2. Put that in the top left of each Virtual Desktop, and your desktops are (at least to some usable extent) labelled.

As an aside - the alternative method described above certainly isn't what we really want - i.e. something more usable like:

  • customizable desktop names visible on the Task View display.
  • configuration options which allow the user to:

    • toggle a positionable(i.e. top left, top center, top right, etc) current desktop label (with adjustable opacity of course) that would display the name of each custom desktop.

    • similarly toggle a current desktop label visible in the notification area of the taskbar.

I haven't found a tool to modify the names that windows uses, however there is an autohotkey tool on Github named win-10-virtual-desktop-enhancer.

It shows a tiny tooltip when you change your desktop

,

as well as an icon in your traybar.

Here is the information from the readme file:

Desktop Names

In a similar manner to wallpapers, you can also set a custom name for each desktop.

Note that the desktop's name will be visible in the tooltip of the tray icon and also in the larger tooltip that appears momentarily when you switch desktops. If a desktop's name is not set, 'Desktop ' will be displayed. Again, like wallpapers, any number of desktops are supported by this feature.

This is great progress. If you miss the desktop naming feature (as I do) as well as configurable direct shortcuts to each desktop (which I miss more), then you can continue to use VirtuaWin in Windows 10.

Here are 2 possible solutions to your problem.

1st Solution

Condition: You have nvidia gpu and possibly nvidia nview that should come with it or just download it (possibly might not need nvidia gpu)

Your Implementation: Use Nview to rename virtual desktops, and change their backgrounds. You can comment. Basically nview is nvidia's software to rename and change and manage virtual desktops and as you change the desktop the name of the flashes

Here's a screenshot of what I mean:

2nd Solution

Condition: You need to have pre-opened all notepads in all virtual desktops

Your Implementation: Use my autohotkey script (link broken), compile it to an exe or just run it. I made it quickly to just work for me and it does the job.

I'm always in tablet mode, since I'm using a tablet! I've had to refresh my machine eight times since switching to Win10, had to totally reset once. Thank goodness I have two other (desktop) machines, both loaded with Win7, because there's no way to get info when your Win10 crashes, or when the system 'misplaces' the desktop and taskbar icons unless you have another computer!

I've gone back to my Win7 machines for all important work. Now using the tablet only for playing 'casual games.' The graphics on these games (all MS games, BTW) is jerky and frustrating, and about half the time, the game locks up on me and I have to close it. After closing a 'frozen' game, I'm careful to login to IE once before shutting down the tablet. I found that when I shut down immediately after closing a frozen game of Solitaire, Sudoku, etc., the desktop icons disappear.

Definitely NOT a system for gaming, either, unless perhaps you own an MS tablet. I also don't like that every other day or so, I'm asked to update my MS info. ARRGHH!
